Straw marquetry · Occitanie

The atelier's triptych
The gesture
A strand of straw is split by hand, following the direction of its fibres. It is flattened with an ivory plioir or agate stone to a thickness of just a few tenths of a millimetre. It is then laid edge to edge onto a metal, paper or wood substrate, depending on the piece. Each strand dictates its own adjustment. The gesture is repeated, never identically. Some strands measure only a few tenths of a millimetre. On small-scale pieces, placement can require tolerances of less than one tenth of a millimetre. At this scale, a deviation no longer disappears into the pattern: it becomes visible. We call this practice straw micro-marquetry.
The material
Rye straw grows through spring season and is harvested in summer. It bears the trace of the elements that shaped it: sun, rain and wind. Its natural colour ranges from pale blond to brown, depending on the harvest. Dyeing opens the full spectrum of colour. No two strands are ever identical. Laid flat, straw reflects light in planes, like scales. Even after harvest, it continues to respond to the light.
The moment
A piece may take from a few hours to several days to complete. It depends on the surface, the intricacy of the motif, the natural adhesives and finishes used, and the temperature and humidity of the atelier. The lead time given to a client follows the actual making time. Never the other way around.
